An incredibly dramatic adventure film, Meru documents three elite mountain climbers’ struggle to find their way through obsession and loss as they attempt to scale Mount Meru, one of the most coveted prizes in the high stakes game of Himalayan wall climbing. Astonishing camera work puts viewers squarely at the top of the world. (87 min)

A taut and tense newsroom drama detailing the 2004 CBS 60 Minutes report investigating then-President George W. Bush’s military service, and the subsequent firestorm of criticism that cost anchor Dan Rather and producer Mary Mapes their careers. With superb performances by Redford and Blanchett, TRUTHportrays the huge risks involved when professional journalism tangles with the highest levels of governmental power. (125 min.)

An extraordinary drama set in northern Turkey, Mustang tells the story of five free spirited sisters whose innocent fun on the beach with their male friends is deemed by town elders to be dangerous and immoral. Their family overreacts, essentially imprisoning the girls, subjecting them to endless lessons in housework in preparation for arranged marriages. As the eldest sisters are married off, the younger ones bond together to avoid the same fate. (97 min)

A riveting documentary that follows the journey of British human rights lawyer Philippe Sands to interview and understand two men whose fathers were indicted as Nazi war criminals for their roles in WWII. An unforgettable look at the legacy of profound injustice. (96 min)

A NOTE ABOUT THE WINTER SCREENING SERIES FROM MNFF ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, JAY CRAVEN
Our Middlebury New Filmmakers’ WINTER FILM SERIES takes me back to my very first days in Vermont. It was May of 1975 when I launched the Catamount Film Series at a handful of town halls, libraries, and grade school all-purpose rooms in the Northeast Kingdom. I showed Charlie Chaplin’s “Limelight” as my first screening and hauled a blue used Bell and Howell 16mm projector around to dates in a friend’s ’67 Mustang. Response was fabulous and I immediately announced “King of Hearts” and a Marlon Brando picture, “Burn,” for summer dates. I then moved to bi-weekly screenings that fall and, in winter, we went weekly.

The MNFF Winter Series will feature unusual pictures that won’t make it to town otherwise—and several are already cropping up on 2015 “10 Best” lists. I’m as excited by these new selections as I was by all the Fellini, Antonioni, and Humphrey Bogart films I showed all those years ago. And they follow the tradition we started last summer—to show films by first and second-time filmmakers. Original and imaginative films provide opportunities for audiences to see the familiar with new eyes—and to discover a thought, emotion, or insight, for the first time. And they do this while fostering a distinctive and memorable experience of shared community.

I hope people attend—we’d like to establish this Series as a year-round offering.
